DMC ALUMNI BOARD

DMC Alumni Board is an informed and engaged global community of Doctors, supporters and influencers who contribute to the long term health of the University and the wider alumni community by sharing their expertise, experience and insights. The Board is made up of alumni who bring a wide range of perspectives and expertise to the table: geographic, generational and professional. They participate in Board meetings three times a year and via interim meetings and other ad hoc volunteer roles and projects. Terms are typically three years.

Alumni Board Standing Orders

Dr Khandkar Ali Kawsar serves as the Chair of the DMC UK Alumni Board. He is a highly trained neurosurgeon with specialist expertise in complex spinal surgery. He completed his neurosurgical and spinal surgical training abroad, with advanced clinical training across leading centres in Birmingham, London, and Leeds. As part of his subspecialty development, he undertook a complex spinal fellowship within the combined departments of Neurosurgery and Orthopaedics in London, followed by a second advanced neuro-spinal fellowship in Leeds, focusing on the management of complex and challenging spinal conditions. He is currently serving at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he has been practising for over four years with a dedicated interest in complex spine surgery, managing the full spectrum of spinal pathologies. Dr Kawsar is recognised for his excellent surgical outcomes, with a consistently low complication rate, reflecting his strong commitment to patient safety and evidence-based clinical practice. Alongside his NHS role, Dr Kawsar is actively involved in private practice at Spire Edinburgh Hospitals, where he continues to provide high-quality, patient-centred care. His professional interests include advanced spinal techniques, multidisciplinary collaboration, and continuous improvement in neurosurgical outcomes. Through his work, he remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of clinical excellence and advancing specialised spine care within the UK healthcare system.
